Have you tried Google Art Project? If the answer is no, then you really should!

"Explore museums from around the world, discover and view hundreds of artworks at incredible zoom levels, and even create and share your own collection of masterpieces."

This Art Project will not only give you the opportunity to view thousand high resolution artworks online in extraordinary detail (thanks to Picasa and App Engine), but you will also be able to "visit" the museums in 360° view (thanks to Google Street View technology).

Using a a specially designed Street View trolley, 360 degree images were taken of selected galleries, and in each museum, some artworks have been photographed at high resolution (7-14 billion pixels in depth) thus enabling viewers to zoom on small details.

This "behind the scenes" video shows how the "Street View" shots were taken:

It is also possible to bookmark and comment on teach painting, and “create your own art collection by saving your favorite images into a personal gallery. Of course, your "collection"can then be shared with friends.

Moroever, museums are providing many other images to complete the gallery, and offering links to information and video on the subjects. For now the following museums are included in the project:

Lots of buzz today on the Web about "Push Pop Press". What? Who?

Not much on the official website for the moment, except for this short introduction: " Our team is bringing together great content and beautiful software to create a new breed of digital books. Books that let you explore photos, videos, music, maps, and interactive graphics, all through a new physics-based multi-touch user interface. Our first title will be available for iPad and iPhone later this year. We can't wait to share it with you."

Ok, just another digital book maker on the way I thought.

So why all the fuss surrounding Push Pop Press? It turns out the start-up was founded in February 2010 by a team that includes Mike Matas, who joined Apple as a designer at 19 (!); Kimon Tsinteris, formerly a senior engineer on the iPhone team, and Austin Sarner, an applications developer (AppZapper, Disco,...).

Apple blogger John Gruber of Daring Fireball had the oppportunity to try Push Pop Press, you can read his full feedback here:

"What I saw (and used) was a multimedia-rich book running on an iPhone 4. There is no UI chrome. No status bar at the top or tab bar at the bottom. It’s just like you see in the still image on their teaser site. The entire screen is filled by content, not user interface elements. The screen is the book, the book is the screen.

You use it almost entirely by swiping and pinching. [...] In Push Pop’s books, [...] to play a video, you just tap play and it plays in place. If you want to play it full-screen, you pinch it out. Pinch back in to go back to the book layout. [...]

And, as they say, there’s a physics engine in place, which gives all the elements on screen a certain heft as you swipe and pinch them. It doesn’t just feel like a game — it feels like an exquisitely crafted game.

Performance is achingly smooth. E.g., when you zoom out or in on a video, the zooming tracks the pinching of your fingers precisely and instantly. Do the pinch fast — more like a popping pinch-flick — and the zoom expansion will respond accordingly and pop the element into full-screen size. Think about how the standard iOS list controls have a momentum-based feel to them — like when you flick them to scroll quickly, or the bounce when you hit the top or bottom. That’s what Push Pop’s UI feels like, except it’s for everything — page-turning, image/video zooming, everything.

The format of their “books” is not HTML or anything like ePub (the format Apple uses for iBooks books). Push Pop’s books are native Cocoa Touch iOS apps. I’ve seen some cool stuff rendered through WebKit, but never anything like this in terms of smoothness, precision, and the lack of latency between touch gestures and on-screen responsiveness. “Pages” look more like they were laid-out by a designer than randomly rendered by a web browser."

If the name "Mike Matas" doesn't ring a bell, I strongly advise you to go check out Mike Matas website.

He is best known for designing key parts of Mac OS X and iPhone. he joined Apple at age 19 (what were we doing at 19?), after creating the media management tool Delicious Library. He’s even been listed as co-inventor on patents Apple has filed.

By the way, it turns out the guy is only 24 and wikipedia points out that " he never attended college".

"Formal schooling ended for me half way through my senior year of high school when I decided to drop out so I could focus on starting up Delicious Monster. Although that’s obviously not to say my education stopped there. I’m educated every day by the places and things I surround myself with, and the people I collaborated with. " Matas says. I haven't posted anything for quite a will now *understatement*. I hope all of you had some nice Christmas holidays, and it still is time to wish you a wonderful year :)

After my trip in Asia, I took some time to reflect on these amazing months in South East Asia, put my life back on tracks and connect with some friends. I also met new interesting people, started a new job and found a new flat. So, yeah, these last weeks have been quite busy!

It takes a lot of time to browse the internet, find something relevant, to talk about on the blog and look for more precise sources. In the next weeks, I'm gonna have to spend some time familiarizing myself with my new work environment (e-business, electronic publishing... Challenging and exciting new stuff ;) ). Consequently, I don't think I can promise you regular posts...for now!

A few months ago, while looking for some info on "Splendor in the grass", a 1961 movie, I stumbled upon this William Wordsworth poem, which is a great way to end this post. Take care guys!

Artist Zac Freeman creates artworks made entirely out of collected junk, found objects, and general trash; and from a distance the result is pretty impressive!

Concerning his work, Freeman says: " I started making assemblage artworks of this type in 1999. [...] I glue the bits of junk to a wooden substrate to form an image, usually faces, which only can be seen at a distance. I was interested in communicating through visual representation in apparent 2-dimensional space and through the actual objects used for the medium in 3-dimensional space. It is very important to me that I incorporate the actual objects into the art as opposed to a picture or rendition of it because it better expresses the intention of the artwork. I feel the junk is more powerful being present. It is an actual thing to be reckoned with that existed in this time and place and carries energy in and of itself."

"Today is October 10, 2010. 10/10/10. In binary, that's 42. And 42 is The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything. Or at least, that's what Douglas Adams says.And 42 is The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything.

Many people wonder what Adams exactly meant by 42, the answer given by the supercomputer Deep Thought in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Why did Adams pick that number? Is there a connection to something the world doesn't know about? Is the CIA and the MI6 involved in all this? Real aliens, perhaps?

On November 3, 1993, he gave an answer on alt.fan.douglas-adams:

The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do'. I typed it out. End of story.

Later, talking to BBC Radio 4 Iain Johnstone, he explained that the number was chosen by none other than John Cleese as the punch line for one of his skits. The famed Python thought it was a funny number, and Adams borrowed it for his book, turning it into a recurring integer through all his work.

But that comment wasn't the end of the mystery. Stephen Fry—a friend of Adams—also jumped into the debate, claiming that the latter explained to him why it was 42. Fry will not reveal the secret, but he says it is "fascinating, extraordinary and, when you think hard about it, completely obvious."

Whatever it is, it sure has had a deep impact in geeklore. One example: The Allen Telescope Array—the radio telescopes system erected by Microsoft's Paul Allen for the SETI program—has 42 dishes in honor of Adams. And in Lost, 42 is the last number in the sequence that has to be entered on The Swan's computer, which is also the sequence picked by Hurley for his winning lottery ticket, and Kwon's number in the cave. In a Lostpedia interview, one of the show's producers confirmed that this was indeed a homage to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

No Pressure

The 10:10 climate change campaign " No pressure" was written by screenwriter Richard Curtis, known for his work on Blackadder, Four Weddings and a Funeral and the co-founder of Comic Relief, and directed by Dougal Wilson. Although it had been released in the UK, the video have been removed after violence complaints.

The aim of "No pressure" is to ask people to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 10% in one year, and to bring to light people that do nothing about climate change. Starring Gillian Anderson and Spurs players, and with music donated by Radiohead, "No Pressure" celebrates "everybody who is actively tackling climate change... by blowing up those are aren't." Basically, in the video, everytime someone says he's not going to do anything about climate change, he/she is blown up at the touch of a button.

Regarding the complaints, 10:10 founder Franny Armstrong told The Guardian: "We 'killed' five people to make No Pressure – a mere blip compared to the 300,000 real people who now die each year from climate change". 10:10 took down the video and issued the following statement with the title 'sorry':

With climate change becoming increasingly threatening, and decreasingly talked about in the media, we wanted to find a way to bring this critical issue back into the headlines whilst making people laugh. We were therefore delighted when Britain's leading comedy writer, Richard Curtis - writer of Blackadder, Four Weddings, Notting Hill and many others – agreed to write a short film for the 10:10 campaign. Many people found the resulting film extremely funny, but unfortunately some didn't and we sincerely apologise to anybody we have offended.

In this short animation: "a red circle, which is colored in reference to the red radiators of Ogre, is traced in a morphological transformation which re-interprets the formal approach of Koman’s works. Gravity’s Loom

Continuing their series of suspensions in an unlikely place, Los Angeles-based design team Ball-Nogues Studio has created an "immersive, site-specific installation": Gravity's Loom.

More than 30 miles of multicolored strings have been installed at the entrance of the Indianapolis Museum of Art's Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion. These strings are "configured in catenary curves, arcs naturally assumed by the strings as they respond to the force of gravity".

Trained as architects, Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues "fuse the disciplines of art, architecture and design, bringing aspects of each world to the other to create technologically innovative and visually spectacular built environments". Well, we all knew this was coming.. Although I love Star Wars, I do have mixed feelings about the 3D. Anyway from StarWars.com :

Presented by Twentieth Century Fox and Lucasfilm Ltd., the cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level, with Industrial Light & Magic supervising the project. Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace is expected to be released theatrically in 2012. A release date has not yet been determined.

Furry Walls!

A few days ago, I saw "Get Him to the Greek" at my local cinema, and found it surprisingly decent. Anyway, there's a hilarious scene featuring furry walls. That's why I can do nothing but fall in love with Dedo, a furry message board created by Gonçalo Campos.

This is quite simple : messages can be left on this board or pictures can be drawn just by dragging a finger in the opposite direction of the artificial fur growth. The size of the board is 700x100 cm, and the board is only made of artificial fur and wood derivate.

Dedo is available for purchase from Arcademi. According to the website "It functions both as a basic communication device and a decoration piece. It offers a much more appealing way to leave a message and converting it into a statement, bringing in a whole new dimension of personalisation and communication to the domestic environment." "Scratch my back" is a funny grater which was designed by Pinkeye - a team of Belgian designers composed of Arnaud De Vicq, Bram De Baere, Luc Heylen, Ruud Belmans and Thomas Vanden Abeele.

"Scratch my back" was one of the many entries of Designboom's "Dining in 2015" competition. This international competition challenges designers to "get inventive with cutlery, tableware and cooking tools".

Whether you grew up eating welsh rarebit, potato babka, or the all-American mac n’ cheese, most likely you have used a grater in preparation of homemade meals. Always a little awkward to use, but a universal culinary tool must-have for most kitchens, graters have been around since the 16th century. Invented by François Boullier (a Parisian eccentric) as a way to encourage consumption of cheese, the grater has certainly positively affected our culinary sensory, but not much has been done in terms of redesigning it. The „Scratch My Back“ grater by Pinkeye takes a swipe at redesigning the functional but ho-hum to look at grater, bringing it forward to the 21st century with a twist.
The result of Designboom's Dining in 2015 competition, „Scratch My Back“ grater was submitted as a design concept by Pinkeye, in the international competition that challenged designers to get inventive with cutlery, tableware and cooking tools. Check out these "alien"cakes/sculptures, which are part of Cakeland created by self-taught artist Scott Hove. Scott Hove works reflect "on the relationship between the natural world and mechanical civilization, and the drama that occurs during this interaction."

Cakeland is a series of sculptures and installations resembling perfect delicious cakes– wall mounted, hanging and standing– and walk-through cake environments complete with their own lighting. The sculptures have all of the appeal of the best cake you have ever tasted, but can never be eaten. The nature of edible cake is fleeting, lasting only as long as the brief celebration it was made for. These cakes last as long as the artist or society have the wherewithal to preserve them.

Being such a destination of beauty, Cakeland requires that it be equipped with its own defense, because the reality of beauty and perfection is that people want to possess it. The sculptures, with their display of beauty and potential for satisfaction, lure the viewer into a sense of anticipation.

The viewer will slowly notice that Cakeland contains defensive elements, not immediately seen, that create a sense of anxiety and fear. This in turn creates a visual and emotional resonance that is intended to represent what we all have to deal with in our lives everyday... the hunt for satisfaction, and the anxiety that we won't get it.

Cakeland is also a celebration of the artificial, and acknowledges our tendency to embrace the artificial in order to feel safe or receive emotional gratification. Cakeland also can serve as an analogue for the search for temporal love; the experience can be incredibly sweet and indulgent, punctuated by moments of insecurity and terror.

The sculptures are formed using carvable rigid polyurethane foam and plywood. The installations are constructed of cardboard, plywood, and any found object that has a suitable form. They are frosted with a variety of acrylic media, using traditional cake decorating tools, and accessorized with fake fruit and other objects found in stores or on the street.

The food cooperative "The Deli Garage" is selling Esslack, an "edible food varnish spray", which allows you to color your food in gold or silver.

This food finish is supposed to be "the most stylish way to refine your culinary creations." Available in gold and silver, you can now spray your fruits, vegetables, meat...and turn them into sparkling gems!

Of course, the food spray is "completely harmless and tasteless to eat". That's really something I'd like to try! Esslack won a New York Festivals Bronze award in 2010.

The saucer of this coffee cup is designed in the form of a maze, which allows its user to play when some coffee drips on it. The purpose of Oluk is to "reuse these drops and make the office hours and breakfasts more enjoyable."

It's been such a long time since I last updated this blog - sorry! But i've been quite busy for the last weeks. I'm leaving for a four-month trip to Asia in a few days: India, Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia.

It's gonna be my first trip in Asia and these days I feel like Betty White casted as the lead role in the next Indiana Jones movie. Anyway, thanks to wonderful websites such as One Bag or Walkabout Travel Gear, I'm ready in terms of logistics! Consequently, this blog will be hibernating for a while. But don't worry, I'll be back!

To illustrate this post, I chose a pic by Yann Arthus Bertrand that as been hanging in my room for some years. It happens to be a picture of Wat Phra Doi Suthep above the city of Chiang Mai in Thailand, and I hope I'll be just there in a few months. See ya folks!

That's quite a concept! London born Philip Levine started using his head as a canvas for creativity back in 2006 when he began to go bald. He describes himself as a "tastemaker, publisher and producer" and he works with professional body painter Kat Sinclair.

As an unexpected, but welcomed reaction, Phil is inspiring people suffering from alopecia and cancer, who are going bald as a result of their illness, to paint their own heads, which he says makes them feel empowered and special."

Tobias Gundorff Boesen, who directed this video, recently graduated animator/artist from the Animation Workshop in Denmark, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Character Animation. This is is his Bachelorfilm from the Animation Workshop. Set to the song "Slow Show" by The National, it is a "non-commercial short film, intended for festivals."

This vid was shot in the forests surrounding Viborg, Denmark: "My main inspiration was victorian litterature, and "Boxer" by the national." says Tobias Gundorff Boesen " It was painful to finish, as shooting stop motion in the forest at night for longer periods turned out to offer alot of problems. But it was also great fun and adventure."

Very similar to the Teet Milk concept presented here on January, here's the soy mamelle! This packaging concept was created by Russian agency Kian:

"The KIAN brand agency took on the process of naming, formulating a creative brand conception, and creating the package shape. Soy milk “Soy mamelle” is a 100% vegetative product. It is a source of high grade fiber and calcium, containing no cholesterol and a proven ability to actually lower cholesterol levels in the human body.

The developed conception of the package shape resembled an udder, which presents the first half of the message in that soy milk is identical to that of a cow. The second part of the message is delivered via the colour score and décor of the packaging, which concentrate on the phytogenesis of the product, creating an image of nature and health."

"The packaging is developed with two options, individual and family size. The individual packaging is made out of glass, while the family size option is made of a natural latex material. The legs of the packaging are made of special valves and dose systems which allow the container to fill multiple glasses simultaneously by gently squeezing it. In this case, the process of interacting with the packaging becomes more alive and interesting. My younger sister is in Pune, India and on the 1st of March on the campus with some friends she celebrated "Holi", the Festival of Colors:

"A welcoming of Spring, Holi is celebrated as the triumph of good over evil. Shopping turned on its head

To promote their new loyalty program, "Sprize," the GAP on Robson Street in Vancouver turned its entire store upside-down. Advertising agency Cossette West uses the tag line “Shopping turned on its head” for this campaign. Visitors to the Robson Street store found everything flipped on its head from 6 till November 10th.

Almost everything has been inverted including the store logo, all of the mannequins, displays, clothes racks that were fixed to the ceiling and even the cars and a hotdog stand outside of the store were flipped around.

Although I'm not really sure of the accuracy of these breakfasts, the composition of these pictures is very interesting, i love the fact that everything is presented without a container.

Kirkwood in Alice wonderland

In reference with the previous post, I am madly in love with these shoes designed by Nicholas Kirkwood, and created especially for the "Alice" exhibit at the Printemps. The details are just amazing : the tiny tea cups and saucers, the key, the antique pocket watch, the beautiful flower, and the heel that looks like a checker board. These beauties may never be released to the public, but they'll always hold a special place in my heart...
